Recessed Lighting is one of the most versatile lighting options on the market. Recessed lights are funnel-shaped or cylindrical fixtures installed in the ceiling. Boasting a width up to 130 degrees, the beam caste by a recessed light is sufficient for reading and working. Recessed fixtures, also referred to as high hats, are available either fixed or adjustable. Before you start buying and installing recessed lighting, there a few things to consider.
When selecting or buying recessed lighting, several types of fixtures and bulbs are available for specific needs.
- Incandescent, also known as “A” bulbs are inexpensive and good for general light or wall washing with the use of reflectors.
- “R” bulbs are most common and have a reflective surface included on the back of the bulb.
- Halogen bulbs offer a clean white light, and are available in both flood and spot types in sizes to fit 4-, 5-, or 6-inch fixtures.
Low-voltage down-lights – particularly those with MR-16 bulbs – are especially popular for tight accent lighting. For a longer throw or more impact, choose low – or standard-voltage PAR bulbs in amiable fixtures housings rather than MR-16’s.
